EARTH DAY IS EVERYDAY!

Yesterday was Earth Day. 🌎 One of the most beautiful things is that we can celebrate Earth Day everyday! I love this quote from the amazing artist/author/illustrator @oliverjeffers which sums up how I feel. 'We only have one planet, and we need to be kind to it. I keep saying it, but it's obvious when you think about it: this is the only place where all the people live. I'm committed to celebrating earth on all the days of the year, not just one.'

I created this art to celebrate Rachel Carson’s birthday, which is May 27. Rachel Carson was a beautiful writer, scientist and conservationist. With her inspirational words, she changed the world and inspired many women to pursue careers in the sciences.

Rachel was the author of several books but her book 'Silent Spring' (1962) helped to change the way people thought about humanity's impact on the natural world, by bringing environmental concerns to the public. It became one of the catalysts for the environmental movement of the 1960s, which eventually lead to changes in legislation and even contributed to the establishment of Earth Day.

Rachel Carson holds a particularly special place in my heart and in the hearts of many people where I live. Rachel visited Woods Hole, here in my hometown of Falmouth, on beautiful Cape Cod, for the first time in 1929. Woods Hole had (and still has) a big science community. Rachel was studying the sea and marine life at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL). This experience inspired her to later write books like ‘The Sea Around Us (1951).

Today, there is a beautiful statue in Woods Hole of Rachel Carson, where she is forever looking over the sea. Thank you to Rachel Carson for being an inspiration!
