Dream Project - Super Shy!

For our fall promo, The CAT Agency asked us to dream big! 'What is your dream project?' I immediately knew the answer - to make an author-illustrated picture book (maybe a series?!!) based on the manuscript I wrote, called 'Super Shy!' It's about a dog at Puppy Kindergarten, learning new skills and being a part of a group of other puppies who seem to know what they are doing. Throughout the story, the pup learns to embrace the fact that sometimes it’s okay to feel small. Trusting its inner power, the pup discovers that what seems like challenges are actually gifts - superpowers! Inspired by my dog, Maverick (who just turned 3! Happy Birthday Maverick!!! 🎂🐾) and the many, many training classes we had together, and for the shy, quiet, little me.

Book Trailer for my book PEW! The Stinky and Legen-Dairy Gift from Colonel Thomas S. Meacham

Here’s the trailer for my book, PEW! The Stinky and Legen-Dairy Gift from Colonel Thomas S. Meacham. It will be coming out this Wednesday, March 15th. So exciting!

PEW!: The Stinky And Legen-dairy Gift from Colonel Thomas S. Meacham Hardcover – Picture Book, March 15, 2023

n 1835, Colonel Thomas S. Meacham wanted to give the president of the United States a present that celebrated the achievements of his upstate New York farming community. Believing that big is always better, he decided a colossal, legen-dairy gift was in order: a wheel of cheese measuring four feet in diameter, two feet thick, and weighing 1,400 pounds. Transporting the cheese to Washington D.C. was another big undertaking. It traveled by wagon and by ship, before being delivered to the White House on New Year's Day in 1836. But with a big cheese comes a big smell, and after a year the president had a stinky situation on his hands. How can he get rid of this cheesy gift? Readers of all ages will enjoy this slice of American history. Back matter includes science facts on cheese making.

I created this art to celebrate Rachel Carson’s birthday, which is May 27. Rachel Carson was a beautiful writer, scientist and conservationist. With her inspirational words, she changed the world and inspired many women to pursue careers in the sciences.

Rachel was the author of several books but her book 'Silent Spring' (1962) helped to change the way people thought about humanity's impact on the natural world, by bringing environmental concerns to the public. It became one of the catalysts for the environmental movement of the 1960s, which eventually lead to changes in legislation and even contributed to the establishment of Earth Day.

Rachel Carson holds a particularly special place in my heart and in the hearts of many people where I live. Rachel visited Woods Hole, here in my hometown of Falmouth, on beautiful Cape Cod, for the first time in 1929. Woods Hole had (and still has) a big science community. Rachel was studying the sea and marine life at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL). This experience inspired her to later write books like ‘The Sea Around Us (1951).

Today, there is a beautiful statue in Woods Hole of Rachel Carson, where she is forever looking over the sea. Thank you to Rachel Carson for being an inspiration!
